Flight to Turin

Turin and its Surroundings

Torino, called in the past Augusta Taurinorum, has today the same old plan of the roman castrum. It was also the capital of the Sabaudo State and later, for a short time, capital of Kingdom of Italy.

This glourious past is illustrated by splendid monuments: down town the Madama and the Royal Palaces and in the surroundings the Valentino Castle and Stupinigi Casino.

Your visit should be completed by a look around the centre's "fin de siècle" streets, and stop in one of the local cafè to taste the famous chocolates "gianduiotti". In one of this places (Caffè Burello) born, thanks to a group of enterpreneurs (among who there was senator Agnelli), the famous motoring factory FIAT. Its first seat was the "Lingotto" that now houses exhibitions and cultural events. In the Duomo of Torino is preserved the Christ shroud, "La Sacra Sindone".

Not far from the town there is the Superga Cathedral, by the architect Juvarra, where some of the sabaudi Kings are buried.

The Mole Antonelliana was in the past a Jewish workship place, now the visitor can take the lift and reach its top.

Of particular interest are also the villages of Chieri, Cuneo, Chivasso, Pinerolo, and the Manta Castle, the property in the past of Saluzzo marquis.
